Can Dogs Drink Milk?

Dogs are mammals and need their mother’s milk to grow strong and healthy puppies. What about later in life? Can dogs drink milk? Can they drink any kind of milk? What kind of milk is it good for?

This guide will cover everything you need to know to give your dog milky treats.

Can Milk be Safe for Dogs?

Most of the time, yes. Technically, all types of milk are safe for dogs unless they have an allergy to any of the ingredients. However, not all milk is safe for dogs. Cow milk is the most commonly available type of milk in grocery stores and restaurants. It contains lactose and complex, hard-to-digest protein. Although most dogs don’t have food allergies, dairy is a common food sensitivity in dogs.

It is not recommended that dogs consume milk. However, they can still enjoy a little bit of cheese and milk every now and again.

Goat milk is the most suitable type of milk for dogs. It lacks complex proteins that make cow milk difficult to digest. However, even though goat milk can be used sparingly or as a dietary supplement, it should not be consumed daily.

Different types of milk

We have already discussed that cow’s milk can be safe but not very good for dogs. But what about other types of milk?

Before we get into the various types of milk and whether or not they are safe for dogs we need to remind you about vegan milk alternatives. Many dairy substitutes such as soy milk, oatmilk, coconut milk, and others contain preservatives, sweeteners and flavorings that can be harmful for your dog. Do not give your dog sweetened or flavored milk.

Milk’s nutritional value

Although cow, goat, or sheep’s milk can be good sources of essential vitamins and fats, dogs shouldn’t be fed these products more than once a month.

Sometimes, dogs receive goat milk as a nutritional supplement to their diet. Goat milk is slightly easier to digest than cow’s milk. It also contains less fat than sheep’s milk. This makes it a ‘happy middle’ option. Your dog’s health can be improved by drinking goat milk, which contains key probiotics. Your vet should be consulted before you give goat milk to your dog. Your vet will approve you to give your dog goat milk. You can also source it from a trusted pet shop or online source like The Honest Kitchen.
