Thanksgiving Food Safety Tips For Dogs

All our Thanksgiving friends, happy thanksgiving. There are many things to be thankful for.

These are some lessons that Kilo the Pug taught me to keep my furry friends and families safe and healthy this holiday season. One of these is “YES” – Most dogs are able to eat turkey and pumpkin.

Thanksgiving Food Your Dog May Like

Although I know it is wrong to share meals with Kilo’s, I have to admit that I do. Both of us love food and bond over it. I will only allow him to have tiny tastes if he is seated at my feet and doesn’t ask (apart from his big brown eyes). It makes me happy to include him in the family.

Here are some delicious foods that your dog can enjoy as part of your Thanksgiving celebration.

Turkey breastPumpkin (numerous benefits – Click here to enjoy healthy and yummy pumpkin recipes )Broccoli (Kilo and I love cooked and raw)AsparagusPeasSweet Potato (great for dogs and humans- see our recipe ideas)Cauliflower (Kilo and I love cooked and raw)Mashed Potato (but no skin, especially green bits as can be toxic)Carrots (Kilo and I love cooked and raw)Bananas – a daily treat for KiloBerries (Kilo is not a fan of raw berries)Apples (but not seeds)Dates (my daughter loves them but large amounts could cause diarrhea in a dog)Cheese (Kilo and I both really love- but can be rich and fattening)

Although they won’t make your dog sick, Doritos, Doritos, and crackers may cause diarrhea. While I don’t mind if Kilo likes them, we should avoid them if we are trying to lose weight or feel more fit.

Things to Avoid

We have learned some hard lessons:

Before everyone goes to dinner, tidy up the appetizers

Guilty Dog – Kilo’s “Crimes”

Kilo is very hungry and can jump and climb quite high. When it comes to food, he is very resourceful.

He was trying to be helpful and cleaned up the appetizers after we moved from the living area to the dining room for a dinner several months ago. He got only a cracker, a carrotstick and a small amount of smoked salmon. Although he did grab a small piece of olive seed, he did not eat it. He did grab a seed of an olive but he didn’t eat it. He now has to keep garbage bins away from him as he enjoys the challenge of knocking over the trash cans. He can move furniture.

Call your vet immediately if your dog eats something that could be dangerous.
