Do You Need to Give CBD Oil to Your Dog?
CBD (Cannabidiol) — The current hot topic. Many believe that CBD oil is a natural medicine that can cure almost any condition. Although I believe CBD oil has a lot to offer, we should temper our excitement.
It was only a matter time before CBD oil became a popular pet care trend. It was impossible to have predicted that CBD oil for dogs would become a rage.
Many pet owners rave about the positive results CBD has given their pets. Because my older Schnauzer Archie is afraid of loud bangs and thunder, I researched this subject extensively. This is a combination of what I discovered.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD (Cannabidiol) oil is one of many compounds extracted from hemp or cannabis. Oil must contain less than 0.3% THC, which is the compound found in cannabis and hemp. THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, is responsible for getting you high.
CBD oil products are currently not allowed on popular online retailers. However, they can be purchased in niche stores such as Kingkanine.com.

There are many hemp oil products that can be used to treat dogs. Here is one of the most effective hemp oils for dogs suffering from anxiety and pain.

How will your dog react?
CBD research and its effects in dogs is a topic that we are still very much lacking. The oil interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid systems, which brings balance and improves wellness. It has anti-anxiety, analgesic and anxiety properties.
Dogs share a similar endocannabinoid system. Therefore, it is possible that they act in the same way. Different dogs may react differently, just like humans. Dogs might feel more anxious if given too much.
Archie was my first customer. I began with a drop of milk on his biscuit. He does seem to be calmer when there is a storm or someone lighting fireworks. He becomes sleepy from all of that.
What can CBD do for you?
There is no evidence to support CBD oil’s benefits in the treatment of dogs. However, CBD oil has been reported by pet owners to calm their dogs and manage their seizures.
The anti-anxiety and analgesic properties of CBD are well documented and supported by human science.
It is not unreasonable to assume that dogs also enjoy the same benefits, especially when you consider the anecdotal evidence.
Doctors believe CBD oil may also stimulate appetite, lower nausea and protect against cancer. These properties have yet to be confirmed by science.
Are there Side Effects to Consider
CBD oil is considered safe by the World Health Organization, even when taken in high amounts. However, no studies have been done to determine the long-term effects of the oil. I wouldn’t recommend giving CBD oil to dogs daily unless absolutely necessary.
It is also important to determine the right dosage. The body weight of your dog should be taken into consideration when determining the dosage. Dogs don’t need the same amount as humans. Start with the lowest dose, and increase if necessary.
Calculating CBD Oil Dosage For Dogs
A safe dosage guideline is 0.2mg/1 pounds. If your dog is 50 pounds in weight, you can give it 10mg CBD.
We now need to determine how much CBD we can safely give to our dog. This is based on the amount of CBD per milliliter (mL). The manufacturer of the CBD oil and the product you’re buying will determine the dosage.
To determine the exact amount of CBD in your dog’s CBD oil, always check with the manufacturer.
Ask your veterinarian for advice before you give CBD products to your dog, especially if they are currently on other medications.
These are the general guidelines.
A dog can receive a CBD oil product that has 300mg CBD and 10mg CBD per/mL. This CBD oil product is suitable for dogs 50 lbs or less.
Let’s suppose you purchased the 75mg formulation instead. This would be approximately 2.5mg/ 1mL. Your 50-pound dog would then need to receive 4mL CBD oil.
Pet owners have reported the following side effects:
Dry mouth: CBD oil can reduce saliva production. Increased thirst in your dog’s body is a sign of CBD oil. Increased thirst: Make sure your dog has access to lots of water.
Are There Any Risks?
There are also risks. We don’t know the long-term effects of CBD oil on dogs. We don’t know the right dosage for dogs who are taking other medications. Third, CBD could interact with other medications that your dog is taking. Low-quality oils may contain high levels of solvents.
I recommend that you consult your vet before you give your dog CBD oil. This is especially important if your dog has an existing treatment. Peanut and Archie, my two dogs, are healthy and have never needed medication.
How to choose the right product for your pet
It is worth paying more to get a reliable, organic product. Some brands use hemp or marijuana that has been treated with pesticides to make their products cheaper. Solvent extraction can be a quick and economical method that lower-priced brands might prefer.
You don’t know what your product is unless you select a trusted brand. There are products that contain very little CBD and others that have high levels of THC.
Visit the website of the manufacturer. The company should be able to provide a certificate and have an independent laboratory test their products.
It is best to purchase the oil for your dog. Peanut and Archie enjoyed a teaspoon of oil on their biscuits. Dropping the oil under your dog’s tongue can be a better way to deliver the oil.
Final Notes
My Dogs Archie & Peanut
Evidence is mounting that CBD can be beneficial for treating anxiety and pain.
Would you give it to Peanut and Archie every day?
No, we don’t know enough about side effects from long-term drug use.
However, I give it to them when there is a storm or fireworks. It is invaluable in such situations.
Remember to consult your veterinarian before giving CBD oil to your dog.
