Halloween is a fun holiday for bipeds. However, the holiday’s creepy costumes, strangers knocking at your door, and frightening decorations can make it scary for pups. We’ve compiled our top tips to keep your Halloween-loving pet safe and happy on those most frightening nights.
Give your dog a safe space
Your pooch will be happy at home on Halloween. It may seem tempting to take Rover out for a walk around the neighborhood with ghosts and goblins, but the strange sights, sounds and smells might make Rover feel frightened or overexcited. The trick-or-treating should be left to the humans.
Even the most calm pooch can become scared by the constant doorbell ringing, the onslaught from ghastly ghosts, and the pretty princesses. Fido deserves his own space. Let him enjoy a quiet place with his creature comforts.
Make sure you are wearing your best costume
While dressing up your dog can be fun for you and your partner, it can make your dog feel stressed and uncomfortable. As we say, know thy dog. Your silly Sally will love to dress up as a ladybug for her Insta followers. Make sure her costume is safe and comfortable (i.e. It should not block vision, hearing, movement, or blur her vision. Keep an eye on your little one at all times. It’s okay if your bud prefers to wear his birthday suit.

Protect the goods
A fun-sized candy bar can be a small part of your daily diet but it can cause serious health problems for your dog. Some candy, including chocolate, can be dangerous (and even deadly!) Ingredients, including the caffeine-like stimulant, methylxanthine, and the artificial sweetener, xylitol. You should keep the sweets and the wrappers safe from the worst-case scenario: the emergency vet at 3 AM. Hint: Figo Pet Insurance makes it much easier to visit the emergency vet.

Decorate thoughtfully
You might be tempted to make Halloween even more fun, but it’s best to keep your decorations simple. Keep curious dogs away from lit candles and jack-o’-lanterns Scooby Doo can also be affected by flashing or loud decor that is meant to scare the humans.
Be sure to remember identification
Your best friend will be most protected in the event of an unfortunate situation. She should be microchipped and has her ID tag and collar. Before the big day, make sure that all information is correct.
You know your pet best. Perhaps she will do a wonderful sit-and-stay for trick-or treaters. She might be more comfortable snuggling up to watch Hocus Pocus while the porch light is on.
