Sidewalk Dog believes that furry friends save lives every day. We couldn’t imagine our lives without them and we wouldn’t want to. We would never, ever be apart from our pets in a perfect world. This world is not perfect, and many people have to make difficult decisions every day. However, there is one thing that no one should have the choice between their safety and their pet’s safety.
Thanks to Purina and RedRover, the Purple Leash Project was created. This project helps animals and people in distress by partnering with shelters in order to make them pet-friendly. It also provides financial support, resources, and emotional support to people and their pets.
Helping Shelters Welcome Pets
Purina began its work nearly a decade ago to keep domestic violence survivors and pets together. One of their associates discovered how many domestic violence survivors and their pets had to make the terrible decision to leave their beloved pet behind or stay in abusive situations.
They created the Purple Leash Project in partnership with RedRover, an organization whose mission it is to rescue animals from distress and strengthen the human-animal relationship.
They have been able to assist one of the most prominent domestic violence shelters in America on its journey towards becoming a shining example of pet-friendly sheltering and a leader voice. They helped to create the PAWS Act Coalition in Support of the Pets and Women Safety Act (PAWS Act), which aids domestic abuse victims and their pets through advocating for federal resources.
Purina
Although 49 states currently have at least one shelter for domestic violence that is pet-friendly, there are still many more to be done. Purina’s goal for 2025 is to make 25% of shelters pet-friendly. They have donated more than $1M so far to help these efforts.
What we can do to help
