To keep you and your dog entertained and to make friends and family laugh, there are a lot of tricks that you can teach your dog. Roll Over is a favorite because it’s safe to teach dogs of all ages.

Begin by laying down with your dog. If you don’t have a method for teaching your dog down yet, click here. )>

Begin by laying down with your dog. Use a lure to get your dog to lie down. Encourage your dog to roll in the opposite direction if she is resting on one side. If she is lying flat on one side, encourage her to roll the other. If she is laying on her right side, roll the treat towards her left-side rib cage.

Place a treat on the nose of your dog and gently move your hand towards his ribs. Mark your dog’s nose and give it a treat for each follow-through. You want him to go further each time. However, if you move too quickly, he may stall and quit. Do not roll over! You want to reward her for being more precise and thus “shaping” your desired behavior. Move another treat towards her rib cage. Repeat this multiple times. Use your marker to give her a treat for each repetition. Slow down! She might balk if you push her too hard. Encourage and praise her willingness to accept the treat.

Your dog will likely start rolling faster if you keep the pace high with treats and praise, and keep it fun. Give your dog a chance to win the jackpot his first few times he rolls over. You are a good dog! Good dog! Slow down and keep her calm so that she doesn’t become scared. You should mark and reward her for every step she takes. Make sure to do this several times. Once she is comfortable, you can add your verbal cue to lure her, and then fade the lure. Congratulations! Go show off!
