How to Use the Dog Whistle in Training

Dog training has been done with dog whistles for a long time. Working retrievers and herding dog are trained to respond to whistle cues. The sound of a whistle can carry farther than the human voice, can be more easily heard in adverse weather and can even be as clear as a “silent whistle”!

Because the silent whistle (also known as “Galton’s Whistle” or “Galton’s Whistle”) isn’t actually silent, it’s just that people can’t hear it. The dog whistle was invented by Sir Francis Galton in 1876 to test the audible limits of human hearing. It emits a sound of 35,000 Hz and is well above the 20-20,000 Hz range that can be detected by the human ear.

Dog whistles can cause damage to their ears. A 35,000 Hz whistle from a dog will be audible by most dogs. Dogs can hear sounds as high as 65,000 Hz. Research suggests that dogs can hear higher frequencies because of their ancestors’ ability to hear the high-pitched sounds of rodents and mice. A dog’s ear has 18 muscles, which is six in a human’s, and a longer canal. This allows them to tilt and turn their ears to tune the sounds that are most interesting to them.

SELECTING A DOG WHISLING

Remember that the initial sound of any whistle is only noise. Although the initial blasts might cause your dog’s curiosity to increase, it is not an indication of a magnetic pull. You can make the sound meaningful for your dog.

Dogs can find the high-pitched sound made by a dog whistle distressing. Research shows that a high-pitched whistle will not cause any harm to your dog, unless it is too close to her ears. However, something can be distressing for dogs without causing them pain. Try another whistle if your dog is uncomfortable with the sound. Acme Whistles offers a variety of dog-training whistles.

Many silent dog whistles can be adjusted. Make sure you read the instructions carefully and set the whistle to the pitch that best orients your dog. A fixed-pitch whistle can be purchased, such as Acme 211.5, which is commonly used by retriever trainers. Pay close attention to the body language of your dog. You want your dog to be curious and not afraid.

A whistle can be used to cue large-ranging off-leash activities (such as directing a hunting or herding dog’s movements) or to retrain a verbal recall that has been “poisoned” and lost its effectiveness. Like any training recall, you should start slowly and gradually increase the difficulty. Make sure to train your dog in a controlled environment or with a long line. Dreamstime.com

HOW TO TRAIN A DOG WHISTLE

You can choose the blast pattern that you will use to cue your dog’s behavior if they are comfortable using the whistle. You might want to use three short whistle sounds for your recall cue. You will give the dog the new recall cue, which is three short toots. If your dog looks at you or comes towards you, mark it immediately with a clicker, or verbal marker like the word “Yes!”, and then reward your dog with a few high-value treats.

If your dog does not respond to your cue, you can reward him by following the cue. So, three toots. Pause for a second or two. Then, give your old cue and mark the behavior with treats. Soon your dog will realize that the three tots are followed by the old recall cue. He should start turning toward you and come towards you when he hears it. After the new cue is received, the old cue can be discarded.
