Fido sits by your back door, waiting patiently for you to put on layers of coats just so he can go outside. You’re probably thinking: Does my dog require a coat? Right? We did a lil diggin’ bc we too wondered, do dogs need coats?
The answer is: It all depends. It all depends on the breed of your pet and how warm it is. Before you go, check your weather app. You don’t need to coat your dog if it is higher than 45 degrees F
Dogs that don’t need coats
Large breeds of doggos are able to handle cold paw naturale. These include Malamutes and Huskies. Even if your senior has a long mane, heat regulation may decline as they age. Shivering, hunched bodies, lifting of paws, and refusal to walk are all signs that you’re too cold.

Dogs that need coats
Some breeds such as Bulldogs and Chihuahuas are small and short-haired, so they may require coats for low temperatures. Without an extra layer, smaller pups won’t be able to retain heat and create enough heat to keep warm. Being cute is a plus.
Corgis and Dachshunds are short-legged dogs with a lower stance, which may mean their coats are thicker. However, their belly fur can accumulate snow and ice. A coat can reduce belly snowballs, and increase warmth.
Larger dog breeds like Greyhounds, Whippets and Weimaraners require coats. Bundling up long-haired dogs, such as Poodles, is a good idea. They love to make a fashion statement.
How to find a dog coat that fits your dog
The new coat for Pupper should be sexy and cover the neck, belly, and tail. Doggo should be able to potty without difficulty, ideally without any sprinkling. While the coat should be snug but not restrict movement (like a hug from a woman), it shouldn’t be too tight.
If Fido is out in the cold and you see someone asking if dogs have coats, point them our way. Tell Fido that you love his winter look!
Is your dog fond of wearing his coat? We’d love to see your furry friends in the comments.
