Are his ears hanging low? Do they wobble to and from? Have you recently cleaned them?

Although it can be scary to clean your dog’s ears, it is essential for his health and happiness. We want our pup to hear you when you open the back door. We chatted with Dr. Angelica Dimock (Managing Shelter Veterinarian at the Animal Humane Society) to find out how to clean dog ears.

How Often Do You Clean Your Dog’s Ears?

Each pair of ears is unique just like doggo. “Some breeds (Labs, Hounds, Cocker Spaniels, Pugs, etc.) Dimock states that some breeds (Labs, Hounds, Cocker Spaniels and Pugs) are known to have recurring ear infections and will require cleanings every day or every few days. Talk to your veterinarian about the best care for your dog.

Cleanliness is second only to dogliness. Clean ears are pink and free of smell, debris, inflammation, and odor. You can tell when your pup’s ears are dirty by knowing what a healthy, clean one looks like. If your pup is barking at you, these are signs that his ears need cleaning.

Three Simple Steps to Clean Dog Ears

Begin by gathering ear cleaning materials: cotton balls/gauze and vet-approved ear cleaners. Next, grab a towel. Don’t forget the treats! This can make it messy so use the bathroom and then go to these steps.

Use enough ear cleaner to cover your dog’s ears. The bottle tip should not be used to poke or touch the inner ear. For 15-30 seconds, gently massage the base of your ear. As the solution dissolves debris, there will be a squishing sound. Let the solution settle. To protect yourself against flying fluids, wrap the towel around your body. Wait for him to stop shaking. After pupper has stopped shaking, wipe any liquid off with a cotton ball or gauze pad.

You want to make it less messy? A cotton ball could be used to soak the cleaner in it, and then use that to squeeze the cleaner into the ear canal and wipe it clean. Use a tissue or cotton ball to remove any extra liquid. After cleaning up, have fun with your pup.

How to clean your dog’s ears.

We wish Princess never heard the word “no” in her entire life. She deserves it all. However, you need to be aware of the doggy ear no’s. Dog ear canals are sensitive like the hooman’s.

Avoid using cotton swabs to clean your ears. The cotton can tear off and may require anesthesia. Many homemade ear-flushing recipes that you can find online include rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or tap water. Dimock warns that these ingredients can worsen an ear infection or increase pain. If the woofer is happy, don’t overclean it. This could cause tissue damage. Do not clean beyond what is visible. If the dog appears to be in pain or upset, stop cleaning. Forcing a dog to clean his ears will cause him to be afraid of future ear cleanings.

How to consult a vet

Do a general cleaning of the ears for 2 to 3 days. If your pup refuses to let you touch his ears or if it becomes more severe, schedule a visit with the vet. You should also be aware of other signs that your doggo may need to see a vet right away.

Moisture can cause ear problems. It creates an environment that is conducive to the growth of yeast and bacteria. Your pup may enjoy playing in water or snow, so make sure to dry the ears with a dry towel.

You can bathe your pet at home by putting cotton balls or tissues in her ears. Dimock says, “Do this even though you’re careful not to get the head wet. Water will find a way into your ears.”

You have such clean ears, my pup! Doggo says that dogs are more likely to be able to hear snacks.

It is important to clean your dog’s ears regularly in order to keep them healthy and free from infection. Your vet will inspect your dog’s ears and give it a thorough cleaning. If you have any concerns about your dog, consult your vet immediately.
